The Wise Woman Speaks to Joab from the Wallby emmanuel_higgins

2 Samuel 20:22

Then the woman went unto all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and cast it out to Joab. And he blew a trumpet, and they retired from the city, every man to his tent. And Joab returned to Jerusalem unto the king.

The verse belongs to the history of David's reign and the difficulties he encountered, including his troubles with Joab. The revolt of Sheba had threatened to become a serious trouble during that reign. In the verse a woman in her wisdom persuades the people of the city to kill Sheba the son of Bichri and send his head out to Joab. Joab then sounds the trumpet, and his men withdraw from the city, every man to his tent, while Joab returns to Jerusalem to the king.

The verse stands within chapters 13-20, which trace David's family troubles to his multiplying wives. That suffering came through idleness, luxury, and jealousy. The detailed faithfulness with which this history is told marks the account as inspired. It shows that God does not hide the sins of even the greatest kings. The history teaches that people cannot break God's laws without suffering, because every transgression carries an inherent curse.
