2 Samuel 20:26

And Ira also the Jairite was a chief ruler about David.

The books of Samuel trace the great shift to kingship in Israel, centered on Samuel, Saul, and David. That movement runs from Eli serving as priest, judge, and leader, through Samuel, on to Saul as king, and then to David as king. Within that larger history, 2 Samuel covers almost the entire reign of David over all Israel. The verse stands in chapters 19 to 21, at the close of David's reign. It belongs to the account of David's later history, which displays the fulfillment of Nathan's denunciation in the judgments that followed David's great transgression.
