2 Samuel 22:13

Through the brightness before him were coals of fire kindled.

This line belongs to the psalm David composed while Saul was pursuing him to take his life. It was written out of that flight and pursuit, looking back on mortal danger and escape. The psalm recounts David's dangers and deliverances and praises God as his merciful preserver. It gives an account of His goodness and deliverance, tracing how He preserved and rescued His servant.

Within that account, the brightness before Him kindling coals of fire forms part of a vivid picture of God's power and presence. The shining brightness going before Him is shown setting coals ablaze, displaying majesty in action for deliverance.
