2 Samuel 22:17

He sent from above, he took me; he drew me out of many waters;

2 Samuel 22:17 belongs to a song David composed while Saul was pursuing him to take his life. It was written while Saul was hunting him with deadly intent.

The song recounts David's dangers and deliverances and praises God as his merciful preserver. It looks back over what threatened him and what God did, turning remembrance into worship.

The verse describes God rescuing David from danger, and from danger so overwhelming that only divine intervention could meet it. The many waters are the perils surrounding David, deep and engulfing on every side. From above God sends, reaches down, takes hold of him, and draws him out of those waters into safety.

That reaching down displays God's watchful care and power in action for one in mortal peril. It leads directly into David's further testimony that God delivered him from enemies too strong for him. God sustained him in the day of calamity and brought him out into a large, safe place because He delighted in him.
