King David on a Crag Beneath a Stormby emmanuel_higgins

2 Samuel 22:2

And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;

The verse belongs to a song David composed while Saul was hunting him to take his life. It came after he had been repeatedly preserved from Saul through divine intervention, and it recounts his dangers and deliverances. It presents the Lord as his secure protection and rescuer, his protector and deliverer.

The rock and fortress images express steadfast care, while deliverer names the power by which God saves from danger and enemies. The verse begins David's testimony to God's goodness, mercy, love, watchful care and acts of power on his behalf, and expresses his trust in God. The song gives praise and glory to God as his merciful preserver.
