2 Samuel 3:21

And Abner said unto David, I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel unto my lord the king, that they may make a league with thee, and that thou mayest reign over all that thine heart desireth. And David sent Abner away; and he went in peace.

Abner's pledge to arise and gather all Israel to David in a covenant that would let him reign over all his heart desired came after Abner grew incensed against the weak and incompetent Ishbosheth and deserted to David with the offer to bring over all the tribes of Israel to him, and this turn illustrates treachery overthrowing the throne that malice and ambition had established. David accepted Abner's proposals and sent him away in peace with honor to accomplish his purpose of gathering Israel. The favorable reception given to so valiant and famed a warrior excited the jealousy of Joab, commander of David's army, who also held a blood-feud against Abner for slaying his brother Asahel in the war between Israel and Judah.
