2 Samuel 4:7
For when they came into the house, he lay on his bed in his bedchamber, and they smote him, and slew him, and beheaded him, and took his head, and gat them away through the plain all night. For when they came into the house, he lay on his bed in his bedchamber, and they smote him, and slew him, and beheaded him, and took his head, and gat them away through the plain all night.
Ishbosheth was murdered in his own house by his own captains, who came in upon him as he lay on his bed in his bedchamber. They struck him and killed him there, then beheaded him and took his head. With that grim trophy they fled away through the plain, traveling all night.
The murderers committed the deed in hope of winning David's favor by removing his rival. Yet the killing was a foul and treacherous crime, not a legitimate act of loyalty or service. David's rule was not to be established by such treachery, and the crime brought no honor to its doers.
