David Fighting Soldiers in the HillsBible World

2 Samuel 5:19

And David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up to the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto David, Go up: for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into thine hand.

Before attacking the Philistines, David sought the Lord's direction rather than moving on his own judgment. His inquiry asked two things together, whether he should go up against them and whether God would give them into his hand. The Lord answered with both a command to advance and a promise of victory. He told David to go up and assured him that He would certainly deliver the Philistines into his hand.

David obeyed the command and met the Philistines in battle. He defeated them and took their gods, leaving the idols of the defeated enemy in Israel's possession. The victory therefore came from following divine guidance rather than acting on his own choice.
