2 Samuel 6:11

And the ark of the LORD continued in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months: and the LORD blessed Obed-edom, and all his household.

Uzzah was struck dead for taking hold of the ark when the oxen shook it, and sudden terror fell upon the rejoicing throng. David had been seeking to honor the ark as the symbol of the divine presence, yet he was astonished and greatly alarmed and in his heart questioned the justice of God. Feeling it would be unsafe to have the ark near him in Jerusalem, he determined to let it remain nearby in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite. The season of gladness was thus turned to grief and mourning.

The ark continued in the house of Obed-edom three months, and the Lord blessed Obed-edom and all his household because of the ark. Its presence brought blessing to those who received it and obeyed God's commandments. That blessing followed the ark's arrival after Uzzah was struck dead for touching it, showing that God's presence brings blessing even as God guards the holiness of the law the ark contained.

As God's presence, the ark cannot remain in a household that supports wrongdoing, for its presence is associated with God's blessing and its removal with His displeasure. In contrast to Obed-edom's blessed home, when a minister yields to the wishes of an unconsecrated companion and upholds wrongs, the ark of God cannot abide in that dwelling. Upon such a home God's frown rests.
