David Gives Bread to the Peopleby emmanuel_higgins

2 Samuel 6:19

And he dealt among all the people, even among the whole multitude of Israel, as well to the women as men, to every one a cake of bread, and a good piece of flesh, and a flagon of wine. So all the people departed every one to his house.

The distribution of bread, meat, and drink took place as part of the great effort to bring the ark from the house of Abinadab at Kirjath-jearim to Jerusalem. For that undertaking thirty thousand leading men of Israel were gathered, together with the priests, princes, and tribal leaders. The procession set out toward the city with exultant shouts and songs of rejoicing. Its music was played on harps, psalteries, timbrels, cornets, and cymbals.

On the way, when they came to Nachon's threshingfloor, the oxen shook the ark. Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark to steady it, and God smote him there for his rashness so that he died by the ark. His sudden death filled the rejoicing throng with terror. In astonishment and alarm David did not bring the ark onward at that time but left it at the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.
