2 Samuel 7:16

And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.

The promise secures David's royal house and his kingdom in permanence, with his throne established forever as a token of enduring favor toward him, his descendants, and the kingdom of Israel. That assurance was joined to the appointment of David's son to build the house of God, a work withheld from David himself. He was denied the building because he had shed much blood and waged many wars, whereas Solomon, whose name signifies the peaceable, was chosen to erect the temple in a time of peace.

In the setting of verses 12-16 the pledge points forward to the Messiah's relation to David's throne and to a kingdom without end. It was misapplied by the Jews, who looked for the Messiah at His first coming to assume an earthly throne, overthrow Rome by force of arms, and restore their national supremacy. The glory and dominion thus foretold belong to Christ's second coming, for His first advent was appointed to humility.
