2 Samuel 8:12
Of Syria, and of Moab, and of the children of Ammon, and of the Philistines, and of Amalek, and of the spoil of Hadadezer, son of Rehob, king of Zobah. Of Syria, and of Moab, and of the children of Ammon, and of the Philistines, and of Amalek, and of the spoil of Hadadezer, son of Rehob, king of Zobah.
2 Samuel 8:12 belongs to the record of David's victories over his surrounding enemies during the establishment of his reign. Those victories subdued his enemies and greatly extended Israel's power and dominion beyond what later kings achieved. In these conquests David had taken control of Syria and extended Israel's frontier eastward to the Euphrates while his forces were besieging the Ammonites' capital. These victories placed nearly all the promised land under his rule and marked the height of his prosperity before his fall.
The verse lists the nations and spoils from which David dedicated gains to the Lord — Syria, Moab, Ammon, the Philistines, Amalek, and the spoil taken from Hadadezer, king of Zobah. After these victories God gave David rest from his enemies, leading him to consider building a permanent house for the ark. Its mention of Amalek is one of the accounts of David's defeats of the Amalekites, showing that they survived earlier conflicts but continued to be defeated as the predicted war against them went on.
The chapter containing the verse may be read alongside the account of David's later defensive victories against Ammon and its allies.
