2 Samuel 8:14

And he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom put he garrisons, and all they of Edom became David’s servants. And the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went.

2 Samuel 8 records David's victories over his surrounding enemies as the establishing of his reign and the enlarging of his kingdom to its broadest extent. He subdued Edom by warfare, stationed garrisons or troops throughout all its territory, and made all they of Edom his servants and subjects. This conquest belonged to the height of his power and prosperity before his sin with Bathsheba, when God had given him rest from his surrounding enemies. And the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went.

With the ark housed in a tent while he himself dwelt in a cedar house, that time of rest led him to think about building a permanent dwelling for God. Israel's subduing of Edom by warfare did not give Israel moral influence over the descendants of Esau. The preservation declared here is an example of God's care extending to the details of a person's life and movements.
