David Dedicates the Golden Shieldsby emmanuel_higgins

2 Samuel 8:9

When Toi king of Hamath heard that David had smitten all the host of Hadadezer,

When Toi king of Hamath heard that David had smitten all the host of Hadadezer. The verse belongs to the narrative record of David's wars, victories, and military expansion. In that expansion he subdued the Syrian kingdom and extended his frontier eastward to the Euphrates, though perhaps not beyond it. Through these wars he triumphed as king over all the tribes of Israel, after Israel had become a powerful, consolidated kingdom.

After his enemies were subdued, Israel's dominion grew greatly under David and was never extended as far by his successors. The victories gave him rest and peace from his surrounding enemies. This conquest belonged to the height of his prosperity, before his sin and the ensuing sorrows of his life, and to the time when, enjoying peace, he began thinking of building a house for God.
