2 Samuel 9:7
And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father’s sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually. And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father’s sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.
David's words were spoken after learning that Jonathan's son Mephibosheth had been crippled since childhood. The promise keeps David's covenant with Jonathan by showing kindness to Jonathan's son for his father's sake. That kindness included restoring Saul's private property to Mephibosheth to support his household.
It also made Mephibosheth a constant guest at the royal table, with a lasting place there to eat bread continually. Mephibosheth had been prejudiced against David by reports portraying him as a usurper, but David's generous and courteous treatment won his affection and loyalty. The kindness shown here forms the background for David's later kindness to Nahash's son Hanun, which he intended as gratitude for Nahash's kindness to him while he was fleeing Saul.
