2 Thessalonians 2:17

Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.

The Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God the Father, who have loved believers and given them everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, will comfort their hearts and establish them in every good word and work. This comfort and steadiness is a gift to be sought from Them, belonging to the last great crisis when the working of the man of sin is revealed, after the call to stand fast and hold the teachings given by word and letter. Its strengthening enables believers to stand fast in the truth, keeping steadfast faith through trials and faithfully carrying out their daily duties and God-given work despite opposition and delayed deliverance. It calls them to cooperate with divinity in saving souls, uniting strong, loving, working human faith with divinity by taking Christ's yoke and learning His meekness and lowliness, laboring together with God to seek the lost and call sinners to repentance rather than remaining idle and indifferent while souls perish. Readiness for every good word and work is needed amid the sorrow of the world and the pressing shadow of sin, and it comes from the presence of Jesus and the teaching and guiding influence of the Holy Spirit on the thoughts, leading to words that cheer, refresh, encourage, and brighten the pathway of others. It makes every church member, especially young people as God's agents and messengers of mercy, a learner in order to be a teacher, prepared and ready to bless those in danger of perishing by speaking often, leading by personal example, and laboring faithfully until hearts are encouraged and strengthened through the salvation of souls.

Giver and Setting of Comfort

The Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God the Father love believers and have given them everlasting consolation and good hope through grace. In that love they comfort hearts inwardly and establish and make firm and strengthen believers in every good word and work and deed. That strengthening makes them firm to stand fast in the truth and live faithfully and carry out daily duties and God-given work despite opposition, delayed deliverance, and trials. This heart comfort and steadiness in every good word and work is a gift to be sought from the Lord Jesus Christ and God the Father.

The promise stands after the call to stand fast and hold the teachings given by word and letter. It belongs to the last great crisis when the working of the man of sin is revealed. There Jesus Christ Himself and God the Father, who loved us and gave everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, comfort hearts and establish believers in every good word and work.

Established for Faithful Service

The strengthening promised in the verse enables believers to stand fast in the truth, upholding steadfast faith through trials and expressing that faith in faithful living and action. It is comfort of heart that makes firmness possible, so that endurance under trial and obedience in daily life go together. The same strengthening enables remaining steadfast in the truth while faithfully carrying out daily duties and God-given work despite opposition and even when deliverance is delayed.

The verse establishes believers for cooperation with divinity in saving souls, joining strong, loving, working human faith to divine power. That union comes by taking Christ's yoke and learning His meekness and lowliness, in which rest is found for labor. So united, believers become laborers together with God in seeking and saving the lost, calling sinners to repentance and refusing idleness and indifference while souls perish around them.

Readiness for every good word and work is needed amid the sorrow of the world and the pressing shadow of sin. That readiness comes from having the presence of Jesus and from the teaching and guiding influence of the Holy Spirit upon thoughts. Guided thought then issues in words that cheer, refresh, encourage, and brighten the pathway of others. The verse makes every church member a learner in order to be a teacher, a truth to be impressed on every mind. This calls for speaking often to sisters and for leading by personal example rather than only saying Go, doing as others should do and feeling as others should feel, so that appreciation of the value of the human soul grows. The call to be prepared and ready extends to all of God's people, especially to young people as God's agents and messengers of mercy to bless those in danger of perishing. God encourages and strengthens hearts as people labor faithfully in His work, giving encouragement through the salvation of souls, as when physicians and ministers work together to warn Boston.
