2 Thessalonians 3:2

And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.

Paul's appeal is a request for the believers in Thessalonica to pray that he and those with him may be rescued from perverse and evil people, because not all people have faith. That prayer for rescue is joined to prayer that the word of the Lord may have free course and be glorified. Because not all have faith, unbelief will often bar the way of God's work. Workers who advance the work where God has indicated must therefore expect peculiar difficulties that tax patience, try faith, and prove steadfastness.

The unreasonable and wicked men are those who discard Christ and His righteousness and accept flooding sophistry. They are people under the influence of evil spirits who control minds, work miracles, make people sick by a spell and then remove it to claim miraculous healing, and who are bound up in bundles ready to be consumed by the fires of the last days. Deliverance is urgently needed because Satan comes down as a beautiful angel presenting lovely pictures to those who have perverted their ways until they do not see what they are or know what they need. The enemy has come down with great power to work with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish, calling for repentance and reconversion.

God delivers His workers again and again from unreasonable and wicked men when they spread their necessities before Him and trust Him most fully even when heaven seems silent and as brass over them. That trusting deliverance in the darkest time means resolving to trust even at the cost of life, saying Though He slay me yet will I trust Him. It means crucifying self, letting the love of God shine forth in words and works, letting the gospel exert a strong uninterrupted influence on mind and heart, rejoicing in God, walking humbly with Him, and standing firm to principle, and then God will bring His purposes to pass. Being delivered also requires putting all capabilities to work, obeying God's Word, believing and proclaiming the simple gospel truths Christ proclaimed, and praying as never before with confession of sins and diligent repentance in the great day of atonement.

Facing such opposition requires meeting difficulties as men and women of steadfast principle. It requires maintaining firm, unyielding, ever-ennobling Bible principle rather than warring for mastery, putting on the whole armor of God to stand against evil, seeking clear eyesight so that human ideas and opinions are not allowed to prevail as the voice of God, and walking in faith and hope and charity in willing obedience to the truth. Since all do not have faith, those without it need to be helped how to believe, how to ask God for wisdom, and how to trust, by being constantly educated that true religion is uplifting, ennobling and elevating and that each person must cooperate with God to bring order and purity into the home which then spreads to reach the church. Where faith is learned the peace of Christ comes, the mist and darkness of unbelief are rolled back, and untidy homes are made pure, sweet and wholesome. All uncleanness, rudeness, contention, sharp speeches, quarreling and the evil disposition that creates dissension are put away, and every dwelling is swept and cleaned and prepared for the heavenly Guest to come in and bless.
