2 Timothy 1:10
But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel: But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:
His appearing as Saviour in human nature made openly known God's saving purpose given before the world began, defeating death and uncovering true deathless life through the gospel appointed to be proclaimed.
He abolished death by voluntarily laying down His mortal life as substitute and sin-bearer to bear its curse and satisfy the claims of God's unchangeable law, which no angel could meet.
Winning the victory in the same human nature overcome in Eden and rising from the grave, He brightened the tomb for believers, spoiled Satan who had the power of death, and became the first-fruits of a great harvest.
Immortality was forfeited by Adam's transgression so fallen humanity has none of its own, and it is obtained only through Christ by believing on Him and receiving Him as present Saviour, while trust in natural immortality apart from Him leads to destruction.
It is received now by repentance, forgiveness, new birth and patient continuance in obedience, bringing present peace and new life, and it is completed at His return when the dead in Christ rise incorruptible and death is swallowed up in victory.
Context and Plain Meaning
Paul's words belong to a fatherly charge to Timothy, his son in the gospel, to stir up the gift of God, to not be ashamed of the testimony of the Lord, to share the afflictions of the gospel, to hold fast sound words in faith and love in Christ Jesus, and to keep the committed trust by the Holy Ghost. That charge grew out of responsibility for the spiritual welfare of those taught to know the true God and Jesus Christ whom He sent, showing that God saved and called with a holy calling by His own purpose and grace given in Christ before the world began and now made manifest by Christ's appearing. This gospel was the message Paul was appointed as preacher, apostle, and teacher to proclaim, and its power gave Timothy grounds to endure hardship without shame and to remain faithful despite opposition and suffering. The same gospel is entrusted to preachers, apostles, and teachers, including those called to teach people outside their faith.
The appearing that now makes the hidden purpose manifest is the coming of Jesus Christ as Saviour. The salvation and holy calling are not according to works but according to His own purpose and grace given in Christ Jesus before the world began, now made plain by that appearing. The favor and rescue planned before the world began is thereby openly revealed, saving and calling sinners to holiness not because of their works but because of God's own purpose and kindness, and opening up true life and deathless existence through the good news. This proves God does not want any soul to perish and will not leave those He ransomed with His own life to become the sport of Satan's temptations, for His mercies are without number and He will not abandon those He bought. All heaven is given to all who believe in Jesus as their present personal Saviour, so to claim to believe the truth yet wear mourning as if orphaned and alone dishonors God. By that appearing He lives to make intercession, and therefore believers bound for the Father's house with title to an immortal inheritance receive not fear but power and love and a sound mind, and should praise Him and show the attractive part of faith with joy rather than journeying as mourners groaning and complaining.
To abolish death means by dying to defeat death itself and to vanquish it in the very act of its seizing its prey. That triumph was won in human nature, the same nature overcome in Eden, with the power of His godhead hidden while He overcame by relying on God, so that Satan bruised His heel but gained nothing, while He bruised Satan's head, destroyed him that had the power of death, and tore away the enemy's foundation by every pang of suffering He endured. To bring life and immortality to light means to reveal, uncover, and make known true life and deathless existence, so that every son and daughter of Adam can comprehend them. This way of life and immortality is made known only through Jesus Christ, who is the fountain of all knowledge and the God of all genuine science, the science of salvation, whose hallowed life taught living and eternal principles. The knowledge of life and immortality through Christ is salvation to all who accept it, and all must have this knowledge or perish, while lower knowledge acquirable by ordinary means according to entrusted capabilities, though estimable in value, is not essential for recovery. Making that hope known to people who do not know Him is done through selfless service in uplifting others, comforting the brokenhearted, and using one's abilities for God and the good of fellow beings.
Life and immortality come to light only through the gospel of Christ, for no one has independent spiritual life apart from Christ, and the sinner is mortal. Believers in Christ have immortal life in the future world, and this promise gives dignity to every human being and grounds the care and fair treatment owed to each as one purchased by Christ. That gospel is the gospel of His death and resurrection and of the resurrection of the dead, like a kernel of wheat falling into the ground and dying to produce a great harvest, by rising again as first-fruits to call the dead united with Him by faith from their graves to a glorious harvest for the heavenly garner and to throw open the kingdom to all believers with the gathering from all nations, tongues, and people.
The appearing encompasses His passage through death, resurrection from the grave, personal appearance afterward, and ascension to the Father. His death, resurrection, personal appearance, and ascension establish the resurrection and future immortal life of the righteous for those who believe, answering denial of a future life and showing the risen life is not merely mortal fleshly life continuing unchanged. His blood is the ransom and His death opens the way to eternal life and brings it within reach, while His resurrection and ascension, followed by His intercession for fallen humanity, carry forward the redemption He accomplished. Because He now lives to make intercession, those heaven-bound have reason to praise Him with joy and show the attractive part of faith instead of traveling as mourners in fear and trouble of heart.
How Christ Abolished Death
As God He was the fountain of life to the world who in His divine person could have withstood the advances of death and refused to come under its dominion. Even in His human nature His divine nature imparted vitality and undecaying vigor that could have withstood disease. Yet as a member of the human family He was mortal, and He voluntarily laid down His life by His own free will and not by compulsion to bring life and immortality to light. In dying He bore the sins of the world and endured the penalty rolling like a mountain upon His divine soul as a sacrifice so that man should not eternally die, and so gave life and revealed deathlessness to the world. He clothed His divinity with humanity and brought into His human nature, in wondrous union of man and God, all the life-giving energies that human beings need and must receive, with the whole treasure of heaven poured out in one gift to save fallen men.
He abolished death by bearing the sin of the world and enduring its penalty and curse as humanity's substitute, surety, and sin-bearer, taking guilt upon His soul. He offered Himself in fulfilment of the covenant made before the world's foundation, freely suffering death, being buried and rising again and declaring Himself the resurrection and the life. He gave His precious life to vanquish death and to destroy him that had the power of death, so that His victory enables those who believe in Him to rise from their graves and share in the life of the redeemed. His death opened hope for fallen humanity, making redemption, cleansing, restoration, and a share in His righteousness possible for those who believe.
Only His life could pay the debt and make that life known, because the law of God is as sacred as God Himself and could not be changed to suit humanity's fallen condition. Even an angel's life could not serve as its sacrifice or satisfy its claims. The Son of God who had walked with Adam and Eve in Eden and who created humanity volunteered after their fall, when they were cut off from Eden and left in hopeless misery with death and wretchedness upon the race, to take the punishment due to them and bear the wrath of the Father, so that man might yet live through faith in His atonement.
That triumph was won in human nature, the same nature Satan had easily overcome in Eden, with the power of His godhead hidden while He overcame by relying on God. Death was vanquished in the very act of seizing its prey, for Satan bruised His heel but gained nothing, while Christ bruised Satan's head, destroying him that had the power of death, depriving him of all power to make men feel his sting, and tearing away the enemy's foundation by every pang of suffering He endured. All who accept Jesus may share that victory by faith, in proportion to their faith, having eternal life in them through eating the flesh and drinking the blood of the Son of God, which is the life of Jesus Christ in them, so that in dying He has made it impossible for those who believe on Him to die eternally. Over the rent sepulcher He proclaimed Himself the resurrection and the life, opening the gates of the tomb and throwing open the gates of eternal life to all who receive Him as a personal Saviour.
By bearing sin's penalty and going down into the grave and rising from the tomb, God in human form brightened the tomb for all who die in faith and in the triumph of hope in Him, so it can be faced without terror and its fetters will be broken when He comes in power and great glory. As possessor and giver of eternal life He alone could conquer death, and by rising He triumphed over Satan and death, led a multitude of captives from their graves as a sample of what is to come, took them to heaven as trophies, and opened a clear way from earth to heaven for those who receive and follow Him, though not all believers were raised then. His death secures eternal life for all who believe in Him, with immortal life in the mansions He has prepared, a life that runs parallel with the life of God. At the same time His dying condemned the originator of sin and disloyalty to suffer the penalty of sin, eternal death, and spoiled death's domain.
He completed the work by becoming human, humbling Himself, and obeying unto death on the cross under the most agonizing and humiliating circumstances, though His human nature shrank from its horror and humiliation. He would not prove His Sonship by coming down from the cross but by completing His death, taking the guilt of the sinner upon His own soul and so giving evidence of His divinity and making life and immortality plain. He lay in the grave like a grain of wheat, remaining alone, then sprang forth in resurrection, with the cry “It is finished” marking the completion of the plan to save fallen humanity. Christ, equal with the Father and originator of the law, freely took upon Himself the suffering and sin of the world, and Satan's apparent triumph in that death instead exposed the results of Satan's lawless principles as the only hope of life.
He assumed humanity to honor it and reveal what humanity may become, laying aside His majesty and glory as Commander in the heavenly courts, joining divinity to humanity, and entering a world marred by the curse to live a life of humiliation, self-denial and self-sacrifice. Homeless and often hungry, wearied and without a place to lay His head, He fills the commonplace, homeliest pursuits of life with brightness. The race was degraded and under the control of an apostate foe, exposed to deception and tyranny aimed at killing both soul and body, and as Life-giver He alone could bear the message of deliverance with a full and complete ransom, assuming human nature to reveal the character of God and to stamp His image on all who receive Him, so that through His infinite sacrifice God receives the homage of a restored race. He kept the law of God in human nature to give an example of what humanity may become by abiding in Him and to prove that humanity can keep that law through His power, bending over men to search into character to see if His own is reflected, since those bought with that price are not their own and all who would share His glory hereafter must share His self-denial and self-sacrifice at every step heavenward.
Immortality Only Through Christ
Immortality was promised on condition of obedience but was forfeited by transgression, so Adam could not transmit to his posterity what he did not possess, and death passed upon all because all have sinned. Adam's disobedience forfeited the gift of life and immortality for himself and all born of him, bringing death and wretchedness with a heavy curse resting on the human race as the portion of all. This was announced to Adam and Eve after their fall when they were cut off from Eden and left in hopeless misery, that as death came through Adam, life and immortality would come through Jesus the promised Redeemer. The Son of God who had walked with them in Eden volunteered to take the punishment due to them and die for them and bear the wrath of the Father, so that man might yet live through faith in His atonement, and only His life could pay the debt because the law of God is as sacred as God Himself and an angel's life could not satisfy its claims. The instructions God gave to Adam, repeated by Seth, and fully exemplified by Enoch cleared away darkness and gloom and danger of discouragement about what profit there is in keeping God's ordinances, giving hope and lifting the faithful out of despair under sin and death. Christ's incarnation made it possible for people to be restored to God's favor and the life lost through sin, and Enoch's faithful life showed that people who obey God and trust the Redeemer can be accepted by God and finally exalted to heaven.
No one has independent spiritual life apart from Christ, and the sinner is mortal, for the soul that sins faces not only the death common to all but also the second death. Life and immortality are brought to light through the gospel and are received through Him alone, not possessed by nature nor inherited, but obtained only through Christ, who alone has immortality. Light and truth must be received from Him in order to be given to others. Because men remain mortal and can fall, they must consider who will take their stewardship if they fall and not gather more responsibilities than the Lord lays on any one man to bear.
Immortality can be obtained only through Christ by complying with the conditions, by believing on the Son and by patient continuance in well-doing in seeking for glory and honor and immortality, for had not God by the sacrifice of His Son brought immortality within their reach there would have been no hope for the fallen race. Eternal life is given to those who believe in the Son and meet the stated conditions, receiving Christ as a personal Saviour and present Life-giver. Christ's death was caused by the transgression of God's law, so sin must be treated as guilt against the Son of God, not as a matter of little consequence, and God sent His only Son to open the way to immortality and place it within human reach. The doctrine of immortality only in Christ was presented and several people received light on this point.
Belief in the soul's immortality apart from Christ is a destructive error, for human souls do not have immortality by nature and life and immortality are made known only by Christ through the gospel. Such belief denies that Christ alone gives life and deathless existence, and it lies at the foundation of tradition and error. It is a soul-destroying heresy that opens a wide door to destruction for all who receive it.
The tree of life in Eden was a type of Christ, the one great Source of immortality and fountain of life in whom is life for men: its fruit was an antidote to death, and its leaves sustained life. After Adam sinned God shut fallen man out from the tree of life and placed an angel with a flaming sword to guard it, so that fallen man could not touch the life-giving tree and sin would not be immortalized, shutting humanity off from access to the tree. Through Him the life lost by sin is made known and restored, and obedience to Him is the life-giving power that gladdens the soul. Those who come to Him and believe receive eternal life; His words are spirit and life, He will raise them at the last day, and those who overcome will be granted to eat from the tree of life in God's paradise.
The life Christ makes known is eternal life, which faithful teachers and the students they lead to salvation will share — the life that measures with the life of God and runs parallel with it. He demonstrated this at Joseph's tomb as the resurrection and the life by breaking the bonds of the grave, so that every person may die to the world, be buried with Him in baptism, and rise as a new creature to newness of life, sustained by the bread of heaven unto eternal life and raising up at the last day. Over the rent sepulcher He proclaimed Himself the resurrection and the life, and that proclamation lights the track of believers as pilgrims and strangers with heaven-born splendor, while the bright beams of the Sun of Righteousness reveal the goodness and mercy and grace of God and the true principles and purposes of the divine ministration. Dying in humanity He overcame death, destroyed him who had the power of death, bruised the serpent's head, and deprived Satan of all power to make men feel his sting, opening the gates of the tomb for all who receive Him as personal Saviour and throwing open the gates of eternal life to all who believe on Him. All believers who pass through natural death have eternal life in them through eating the flesh and drinking the blood of the Son of God, which is the life of Jesus Christ in them, so that in dying He has made it impossible for those who believe on Him to die eternally, and those who feed on Him by faith have His Spirit and His life hidden with Him in God, which makes their life precious in God's sight.
Receiving Life By Faith
Eternal life is received by looking to Christ in faith and receiving the salvation won by His death, for He died and rose to make life and immortality known. Those who accept Him as a present personal Saviour receive His righteousness as their salvation, and through what He has done they are invited to repent, believe, and obey God's commandments. That reception is personal and thorough: the heart renewed by grace and transformed by the Holy Spirit, repentance and confession of sin, forgiveness received, becoming a new creature in Christ, counting all things loss for the knowledge of Christ, consecrating every remaining hour to His service, purifying the soul by obeying the truth, and becoming complete in Him. This is what places a person in the straight and narrow path to heaven rather than the broad road to death, and Christ is the believer's helper and sufficiency in it. To know in this way the only true God and Jesus Christ whom He has sent is itself eternal life, and it is entered by faith that walks not by sight, bringing pardon, peace, assurance, purity, and freedom despite human depravity.
Immortality was promised on condition of obedience but forfeited by transgression, so only through Christ can it be obtained by complying with the conditions, by believing on the Son and by patient continuance in well-doing in seeking for glory and honor and immortality. Christ purchased life and immortality for sinners by bearing their sentence of death, and through obedience to God's commands fallen sinners may find pardon and peace and live in perfect harmony with God. Life and immortality are made known through perfect sanctification of the truth, received by believing God's known declarations and obeying His abiding Word which gives life. Saving faith is not mere belief and formal action but works by love and purifies the soul, molding character, words, and spirit, while knowledge of Scripture and the terms of salvation satisfies the soul and obedience enables seekers to become God's sons and daughters fitted to associate with heaven's angels. Those who disbelieve after knowing truth strangely follow weakness after Satan, standing with the popularity of sin and not on the side of life and immortality, for there is no middle path to Paradise restored.
Because Christ took human nature while remaining one with God, He is the link between God and humanity, and through Him believers become children of God and partakers of the divine nature. Adam's disobedience forfeited the gift of life and immortality for himself and all born of him, but Christ's incarnation as humanity's substitute and surety made restoration to God's favor and the life lost through sin possible. Those who receive Christ as their Life-giver and accept His righteousness become God's children and share His eternal life, for immortality comes from God through receiving Christ's life. Over the rent sepulcher He proclaimed Himself the resurrection and the life, opening the gates of the tomb and throwing open the gates of eternal life to all who receive Him as personal Saviour and believe on Him. All believers who pass through natural death have eternal life in them through eating the flesh and drinking the blood of the Son of God, which is the life of Jesus Christ in them, so that believing on Him makes it impossible to die eternally. Receiving the living truths of Scripture and doing God's will is that eating and drinking: believers feed on God's Word, which is spirit and life, and the Holy Spirit makes it immortal truth giving spiritual strength to the prayerful searcher.
The gift begins in this life as a present experience of new life with new tastes and new affections, filling the soul with sweetness of peace and gladness and joy. Christ enlightens mind and soul, and those who receive grace from Him may share it with others, revealing God's character through knowing Christ as a personal Saviour. That knowing brings assurance, peace, and rest in His love, and means knowing in truth in whom one has believed, knowing one is not following cunningly devised fables, and standing on the Eternal Rock. Through faith in Him people share in the benefits and blessings of both the Old and New Testaments.
His coming did not lessen God's claims on people but enforced their obligations, and the truth as it is in Jesus is the foundation of righteousness and sanctification. He came to bring life and immortality to light by exalting God's law and making it honorable, and His suffering and death demonstrate that the law remains binding on human beings and cannot change. To belittle the law is to reproach Christ Himself, for He did not come to set it aside. Since His death was caused by transgression of God's law, sin must be treated as guilt against the Son of God, not as a matter of little consequence.
What He gave to bring life and immortality to light is eternal life in the kingdom of heaven, a grand subject too great for human mind to comprehend or imagination to grasp. In giving His Son God gave with Him all the treasures of heaven, and every person through faith has right to these treasures to qualify for usefulness and duty to God's glory. In giving Himself He gave all without limiting His gifts, becoming poor though equal with the Father and descending to the depths of humiliation so grace would be multiplied and the streams of salvation poured out to the perishing. Every provision has been made for another probation and trial, with every facility and advantage given at immense sacrifice to restore the moral image of God in man, so all who return to loyalty may secure the life which is eternal. Yet life and immortality in God's kingdom is offered to all but received only by those who fulfill the conditions God has covenanted, being uplifted and enriched instead of clinging to earth and to self-righteousness, which calls for giving self to Him in return by denying self, lifting the cross and bearing it, following Jesus through evil as well as through good report, and keeping the great Pattern in view. Few accept the gift expressing His boundless love in Christ to people who are His by creation and by redemption.
Resurrection and Future Reward
Christ's death, resurrection, personal appearances afterward, and ascension establish the resurrection and future immortal life of the righteous who believe in Him. His passage through death and rising from the grave answers the denial of a future life and the question whether a man who dies shall live again, showing that the risen life is not simply mortal fleshly life continuing unchanged. By going down into the grave and rising He brightened the tomb for all who die in faith, securing eternal life for believers while condemning the originator of sin to eternal death. His raising of Lazarus was decisive evidence of His divine character and claim, demonstrating that He alone can restore life and overcome death as a conquered foe.
His death is like a kernel of wheat falling into the ground and dying, productive of a great harvest. By giving His life He rises as the first-fruits, and as the Life-giver will call the dead united with Him by faith from their graves to a glorious harvest of ripe grain for the heavenly garner. He would not prove His Sonship by coming down from the cross but by completing His death, lying in the grave like a grain of wheat alone, then springing forth in resurrection, taking the sinner's guilt upon His soul and making life and immortality plain. Through this gospel of His death and resurrection the kingdom of heaven is thrown open to all believers, with the gathering from all nations, tongues, and people following His death.
By rising from the grave He triumphed over Satan, the author of death, and over death itself, demonstrating His power over death and opening a clear way from earth to heaven for those who receive and follow Him. After His resurrection He raised a multitude of captives from their graves as a sample of what is to come, showing that death and the grave will not hold them, and took them to heaven as trophies of His victory. Not all believers were raised then.
Redemption from death is completed when He comes in power and great glory and breaks the tomb's fetters for those who hope in Him. At the last trumpet the dead who sleep in Christ will be raised incorruptible to glorious immortality and the living changed, mortal putting on immortality, death swallowed up in victory. Then the dead sleepers in Christ rise from their graves to live forever in God's kingdom in the mansions He has prepared, a life that runs parallel with the life of God.
Because He lives and continually acts as living agent and officiating priest in the heavenly sanctuary, His resurrection assures the future life and salvation of believers, making it certain that because He lives they shall live also. Every provision has been made for every moral and spiritual necessity, opening a door no man can shut from which shines the glory of God in beams of merciful light. Life and immortality will be given as a crown of life on that day to those who kept the faith, received Him as personal Saviour, and did not deny Him.
This future immortal life is opened to humanity as a gift offered to all and set before believers as a hope and goal as they learn from Christ and press toward God's standard. The hope of immortal glory is pursued successfully only through Him. It is a good hope through Jesus Christ that turns the heart from this world toward heaven and Christ's appearing, where the world to come holds the reward and joy of the saints. His sacrifice, including His death, is reason for rejoicing in every condition, while earthly blessings are temporary compared with the priceless gift of immortal life and eternal glory, which are the true riches to be used to help others and honor God rather than hoarded.
Proclaiming and Reflecting Light
The hope of life and deathless existence openly revealed through the good news is ground for courage in enduring suffering and hardship for that good news without shame or fear. The rescue was planned in kindness before the world began, not according to human works, and is now made plain by the coming of Jesus as Saviour, who lives to intercede and will not abandon those bought with His own life to become the sport of temptation. All heaven is given to those who trust Him as a present, personal Saviour, with title to an immortal inheritance in the Father's house, receiving not fear but power and love and a sound mind. To profess the truth while wearing mourning as orphaned and alone, journeying as mourners groaning and complaining, dishonors God, while praise with joy shows the attractive part of faith.
Life and deathless existence made known through the good news are to be revealed to the world through followers who are one with God in Christ, so that the world sees God in them. It is their privilege to have the spirit of light and knowledge that is the wisdom of heaven, and all who have this spirit, in the highest or the lowest place of service, reveal its power in their work and lives. By beholding continually Him who lived among men a life of perfect obedience, the more closely they study Him the more nearly they resemble Him in character, reflecting His character and life-giving grace with greater efficiency in working for others. This representing of Him is by letting light shine in clear, steady rays before men in good works that lead others to glorify God.
Making that hope known to those who do not know Him is done through selfless service, uplifting others, comforting the brokenhearted, and using abilities for God and the good of fellow beings. It includes loving, personal labor to win souls, especially the youth, leaving pride behind, walking toward eternal life, and working with God to help save souls. This promise of immortal life in the future world gives dignity to every human being and grounds the care and fair treatment owed to each one as purchased by Christ.
That redemption at infinite cost gives human life great value in God's sight, for souls are capable of living through the eternal ages. Each person is therefore to do his own part where best fitted, using and developing the talents, capabilities, and power God gave and cultivating God-given intellect. No one is to be a machine or a shadow or mere copy of another, nor to take in another's ideas simply because that person holds a high position of trust, but with humble, contrite heart to ask God for wisdom and drink for himself from the fountain of living water, since the source of divine power is open to all.
Grace in Christ revealing salvation, life, and deathless existence elevates, refines, sanctifies, and educates God's heritage not in minuteness of etiquette but in the science of salvation and godliness, forming inward character through knowledge of godliness. Through that grace teachers can cooperate with God to fit even deficient ones with the inward adorning of great price in God's sight. That education prepares sons and daughters of God to be transformed by the finishing touch of immortality and to carry forward more thoroughly in heaven the education begun in schools below, remaining learners through all eternity, with faithful teachers and the students they lead to salvation sharing the life that measures with the life of God. Fixing the mind on these revealed heavenly themes prepares people to enjoy the realities of deathless existence, strengthening the mind and forming proper conceptions of heavenly things.
When God gave His Son He gave with Him all the treasures and facilities of heaven, so that every person through faith has right to them to qualify for usefulness and duty to God's glory. In return self is to be given to Him by denying self, lifting and bearing the cross, following through evil as well as good report with the great Pattern in view, bearing His image and mind, imitating His example of doing good and relieving suffering along the one path He traveled and illuminated by identifying with suffering humanity to reveal God's goodness, mercy, and love. Believers are given the privilege of being co-laborers and human agencies, required to work with Him by investing in His cause the very means placed in their hands to sound the note of warning, sharing His self-denial and self-sacrifice at every step heavenward because having been bought with that price they are not their own. When professed Christians are lukewarm, selfish, and covetous they leave stumbling blocks in the pathway of sinners, who use them as excuse for neglecting so great salvation.
He came as the promised Branch from Jesse, resting on the Spirit of wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and reverence, judging with righteousness and equity especially for the poor and meek, destroying the wicked, and establishing government on David's throne with justice and peace forever as the child and Son called Mighty God and Prince of Peace. His truth was grand and high and exalted, bringing the great principles of love to God and man into practical life, in contrast to rabbis' fables, childish traditions, fabrications, and falsehoods that darkened sacred truth. Yet the narrow and limited comprehension of the disciples, honoring Jewish fables as wisdom and mingling subjects of eternal interest with human traditions with unsanctified imaginations, restrained His teaching and determined the measure of divine communication, so He left many things unrevealed because they could not bear them now.
Study of the origin of evil and its results helps bring Christ and deathless existence to light, and His giving of His own life made redemption possible for the fallen race. Just before yielding His life to bring life and deathless existence to light, amid suffering and daily rejection, He looked two thousand years ahead to His church living in the last days before the close of earth's history, praying for all who would believe through His disciples to the end of the world. His appointed work to bring life and deathless existence to light was done even as He answered the question about what to do to inherit eternal life, while hostile listeners watched as spies to catch some word from His lips.
God raised Christ from the dead to bring life and deathless existence to light through the good news and so save His people from sins, and by that same work Christ raises fallen human beings dead in sin to spiritual life, quickening them with His own life and filling hearts with hope and joy. Full provision has been made for oneness with Him, opening the way to heaven's kingdom for believers who receive power to become God's children and follow His will. As one contemplates His character and identifies with Him, truth makes a deep imprint on mind and character, knowledge of God is measured by knowledge of Christ, and elevation is measured not by worldly knowledge but by knowledge of the one thing needful for salvation, lifting from degradation, freeing from tyrannical power, and exalting as designed. To think receiving Christ a step downward proves one down already, fallen as Adam fell and as the nation that refused the only provision did, standing apart, denying Him, refusing mercy, scorning the Saviour, and receiving just recompense proportionate to the greatness of God's offering of His Son to shameful death for the world's salvation.
The appearing in incarnation reveals life and deathless existence as streams of salvation flowing to human hearts, yet this revelation is still only dimly comprehended even by those in positions of responsibility and trust. When those in responsibility are connected with God, the revelation impresses the work and cause of God, causing all who claim to be children to represent Jesus in character through self-denial and self-sacrifice as those who overcome through His strength who overcame on their behalf. That infinite sacrifice of the Son, rich in majesty, honor, and glory, becoming poor so that through His poverty men might be rich, is why earthly blessings keep being given despite perversity and ingratitude, joined with the sent saving power of the Spirit to guide into all truth and with His blood as ransom by which people are complete in grace and may share His throne. True Christians, not mere professors, must therefore represent that self-denial in character, being Christlike, bearing His image, imitating His example, and living the law in daily life.
