2 Timothy 1:14

That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.

The good thing committed is the gospel itself, the precious truth and sound teaching heard in faith and love in Christ Jesus. It is to be guarded and kept faithful by the Holy Spirit who dwells within believers, whose indwelling presence is the strength for the task. Keeping it means holding fast the form of sound words in faith and love, persuaded that Christ is able to keep what is committed to Him against that day. Those enlightened by the Spirit treat the truth as a most precious trust to be preserved, grown in, and passed on to faithful men able to teach others also, and by so holding fast they are guarded against fables, false representations, and doctrines that turn hearts from the faith.

The Good Thing Entrusted

The good thing entrusted is the gospel itself and its sound teaching, a precious truth committed as a sacred trust to be guarded and kept faithful. It is the form of sound words heard in faith and love in Christ Jesus, to be held fast as the charge belonging to the believer. That truth is a most important talent given to those enlightened by the Spirit, having height and depth and breadth in what it requires. It is to be preserved, grown in understanding, and passed on by committing what was heard to faithful men able to teach others also, like a scribe instructed unto the kingdom bringing forth out of his treasure things new and old.

The charge belongs to Timothy as a son in the gospel, trained from childhood in the Scriptures and cared for with fatherly prayer and responsibility for spiritual welfare beyond mere head knowledge. He is heir of unfeigned faith first dwelling in his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice, and is urged to stir up the gift of God within him. He is to live in a spirit not of fear but of power and of love and of a sound mind, unashamed of Christ and of Paul as prisoner, and willing to share affliction for the gospel according to the power of God. He rests in a holy calling not according to works but according to divine purpose and grace given before the world began and now revealed by Christ, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. He is called not only to read and teach the Word but to become its diligent student, keeping the form of sound words heard from Paul in faith and love in Christ Jesus.

Keeping by Holy Spirit

The precious truth entrusted must be guarded and kept faithful, and the strength for this task is the Holy Spirit dwelling within believers. The good thing committed is the gospel and its sound teaching, the form of sound words heard in faith and love in Christ Jesus, and it is to be kept through the indwelling Holy Ghost whose influence is essential to faithful gospel teaching and ministry. This charge calls for faithful care of what concerns eternal interests, with the same exactness required in other duties. Prayer, belief, and earnest work belong to the keeping of it.

Keeping it belongs with holding fast the form of sound words in faith and love in Christ Jesus. It stands together with being persuaded that Christ is able to keep what is committed to Him against that day. The Word of God should be everything to believers: they are to love and obey it, and the Holy Spirit dwelling in them enables Christ's true followers to magnify His name.

Those enlightened by the Spirit hold the truth as a most important talent having height and depth and breadth. They are to preserve it, grow in understanding, and pass its treasures on to others. This is done by committing what was heard to faithful men able to teach others also, like a scribe instructed unto the kingdom bringing forth out of his treasure things new and old. It includes making use of opportunities to teach it to people outside their faith.

When the life is given into the control of the truth its power is unlimited. Truth becomes real in the receiver, stamped on the heart and applied practically with directness to God's high standard. The heart as the citadel of the being becomes wholly on the Lord's side, thoughts are brought into captivity to Jesus Christ, and appropriate and fitting words, especially guarded speech, are brought forth from the treasure of the heart. Holding fast in this way guards against false representations that lead many into darkness, against turning ears from truth to fables, and against departing from the faith to give heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils.
