2 Timothy 1:17

But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me.

This verse belongs to Paul's testimony and charge to Timothy, his son in the gospel. When Paul was imprisoned in Rome, Onesiphorus searched for him very diligently and found him. His coming showed fidelity, since he was not hindered by Paul's chains or by the danger of associating with a prisoner. He kept visiting and refreshing Paul, bringing comfort and cheer that encouraged Paul in loneliness and desertion.

The verse presents Paul as a father to the flock, whose burden was the spiritual welfare of his pupils and not mere head knowledge. It belongs to his call for them to know the true God and Jesus Christ whom He sent. It belongs to his practice of calling his pupils to him and praying with them. It belongs to his instruction to Timothy not only to read and teach the Word but to become a diligent student of the Scriptures, as one trained in the Scriptures from a child.
