2 Timothy 1:3

I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;

Paul served God from his forefathers with pure conscience, continuing in the faith they held. He held Timothy in remembrance without ceasing in his prayers night and day, keeping him continually in mind. That constant intercession expressed a father's burden for his son in the gospel and for the flock. It was a responsibility for their spiritual welfare that went beyond mere head knowledge, aiming that they should know the true God and Jesus Christ whom He sent.

His care included often calling his pupils to him and bowing with them in prayer. Timothy had been trained from childhood in the knowledge of the Scriptures. For him this care meant not only reading and teaching the Word but becoming its diligent student.
