2 Timothy 1:9
Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,
God has saved us and called us with a holy calling to a holy life, not because of our works but because of His own purpose and grace given to us in Christ Jesus before the world began. That purpose was settled as a decree before creation and has now been made plain by the appearing of Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. The holy calling is a sacred vocation to serve God and proclaim Christ without shame, sharing in the afflictions of the gospel with courage, love and sound judgment. It grows from sincere faith that stirs up the gift of God, takes away fear, and gives power and love and a sound mind, with the possibility of becoming holy and blameless in character through sanctification and belief of the truth. Those so called live it out in a holy and happy life of obedience and fellowship, strengthening one another and meeting together for prayer, worship and study as they prepare for the day of God.
Saved by Purpose and Grace
God has saved us and called us with a holy calling to a holy life, not because of our works but according to His own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began. That calling is joined to sharing in the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God, giving assurance and courage to endure without shame.
God's saving purpose was established as a decree before the world was made. Christ knew this decree and was assured that truth, empowered by the Holy Spirit, would triumph over evil.
That purpose and grace, given before the world began, has now been made manifest by the appearing of the Saviour Jesus Christ. He has abolished death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. Timothy's calling to proclaim the gospel and the power of Christ illustrates this commission, as does Paul's calling as preacher, apostle, and teacher of the Gentiles, suffered without shame in trust that God could keep what was committed to Him.
The verse shows God's love manifested in sending His only begotten Son into the world that we might live through Him. He wills not that any soul should perish, and His mercies are without number. He will not leave His purchased possession, ransomed by His own life, to become the sport of Satan's temptations. All heaven is given to all who believe in Jesus Christ as their present, personal Saviour.
God accepts us in the Beloved and blesses us with all spiritual blessings in Christ from an unfailing source, the Fountain of life, so unbelief is to be dismissed. The Father pledges to give to man returning in faith and repentance all the love He bestows on Christ. Christ as surety renders an account with the perfection of His own obedience and righteousness for everyone who will wear His yoke and believe in Him. The Holy Spirit works with human agencies to minister Christ's grace and to give grace and peace with the fullness of all spiritual blessings to make the salvation of souls a certainty.
Living Out Holy Calling
The holy calling is a sacred vocation to serve God and proclaim the gospel and the power of Christ who brought life and immortality to light. Timothy was called with this holy calling to proclaim the gospel, and Paul's own calling as preacher and apostle and teacher of the Gentiles illustrates the commission, suffered without shame in trust that God could keep what was committed to Him until the final day. Paul's purpose in life became serving the One whose name he had once despised, and his faith upheld him through opposition and persecution so that nothing turned him from that purpose.
The verse belongs to Paul's fatherly testimony to Timothy his son in the gospel, training him beyond mere head knowledge to know the true God and Jesus Christ through praying together, diligent study and teaching of the Scriptures, and care for spiritual welfare. It calls to hold fast sound words in faith and love, to keep what was committed by the Holy Ghost, to commit it to faithful men who can teach others, to endure hardness as a good soldier, to suffer in order to reign with Him, and to teach opposers gently without striving about words. The calling requires not being ashamed of the testimony of the Lord nor of His prisoners, but sharing in the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God, with courage and love and sound judgment even amid hardship and suffering without shame. This grace was given in Christ Jesus before the world began, not according to works but according to God's own purpose and grace, and gives assurance and courage to bear affliction.
The calling grows from unfeigned faith and stirs up the gift of God, removing the spirit of fear and giving power and love and a sound mind. It presents the wonderful possibility of receiving nothing less than the character Christ revealed, to be made holy and without blame through sanctification and belief of the truth unto Christ's glory. Trusting followers share through Christ a series of victories, even when not visible in this life but recognized in the hereafter. The verse proves He is the Saviour who lives to make intercession, which is ground for praise and for showing the attractive part of faith with joy as those heaven-bound to the Father's house. No soul dishonors God more than by claiming to believe the truth while going as mourners in garments of mourning as though orphans, groaning and complaining and denying His love and mercy and keeping power.
The calling applies to a special duty toward those outside the faith, sharing the gospel and teaching the truth whenever opportunity arises. Christians are called with it to live a holy and happy life through obedience and fellowship with God and other believers, strengthening and encouraging one another as they prepare for the day of God. Meeting together for prayer and confession and worship and study helps believers grow in unity and Christian love and prepare for Christ's coming and the heavenly assemblies. Fathers and mothers and parents neglect the holy calling when they leave its simplicity and adopt the customs and maxims of the world. Though Christ freely and abundantly offers the unsearchable riches of His grace, those who turn from the calling prove themselves unworthy of that gift.
