2 Timothy 2:10
Therefore I endure all things for the elect’s sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. Therefore I endure all things for the elect’s sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
Salvation is found in Christ Jesus and comes with eternal glory, and it does not depend on side issues, so curious questions driven by interest in unrevealed matters are not essential to it. Souls are worth saving, and minds and thoughts are to be brought into captivity to the will of Christ so that He can place His own mark and superscription upon them.
The meaning of the verse is to endure all things for the sake of the elect, for the sake of others, so that they also may obtain that salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. It is Paul's charge to Timothy, extended to students preparing for ministry, calling them to study for time and for eternity. It requires God's servants to suffer willingly and endure all things for Christ's sake in order to save those for whom He died. It is to be impressed on the heart and brought into the practical life.
This endurance requires being changed from glory to glory and from character to character by beholding Christ. It requires placing a high estimate upon humanity when under the controlling power of God, standing to the front in His work, and falling upon the Rock and being broken in order to feel the power of Christ. For God's servants this means ministering faithfully in word and doctrine, not studying their own ease but laboring earnestly and cheerfully with self-sacrifice. It means feeling the burden for souls and the woe upon them if they preach not the gospel. The slothful, dilatory, and self-caring who love ease, will not take the burden, and will not be baptized into suffering are not acknowledged as self-sacrificing servants and must be scourged out, leaving a pure and faithful company.
For students preparing for ministry the verse calls for good, hard, earnest labor in scholastic life in enduring all things for the elect's sakes. It warns not to take a protracted classical course before entering ministry, because prolonged study of books disqualifies many for the essential labor they must do. For church members, especially in a time of special blessing, it means not remaining self-satisfied, indifferent, and backslidden, but awaking to obligation, clearing the King's highway, helping with means, and standing in perfect harmony. It means attending meetings armed and equipped for service, talking with any who are interested, praying and working for the lost sheep, praying while going about daily duties, drawing strength from Christ with deepest gratitude, and being laborers together with Him in sustaining the work being done to bring people to salvation.
