2 Timothy 2:8

Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel:

The counsel of 2 Timothy 2:4-8, to which this verse belongs, is for everyone who opens the Scriptures to others, calling them to read that passage carefully and with a heart that seeks to understand. That counsel lays a solemn responsibility on teachers to be an influence that gives life rather than death. It requires them not to undermine hearers and destroy faith by profitless disputes over words. It requires them also not to turn hearers from truth by teaching ideas and principles derived from evil, satanic counsel.

The chapter guards the verse against the invention of new and strange teachings from human imagination. It does so by directing attention to what Scripture plainly reveals. It shows that salvation does not depend on marginal, side issues. Questions about things not essential to know can wait.

The chapter containing this verse is to be impressed on the heart and brought into practical life by church members during a united, special effort to proclaim the truth. In that evangelistic setting the verse calls believers not to remain indifferent while the Word is being presented. It calls them instead to pray, to work for those who are lost, and to sustain and support the work being done.

More fully, living out the verse means not remaining self-satisfied and backslidden. It means examining the heart by the light of the Word, and confessing and repenting of discovered sin. It means drawing near to God and living in perfect harmony with one another. It means using means to prepare the way and attending the meetings armed and equipped for service. It means praying daily and amid daily duties, speaking personally with any who are interested, drawing strength from Christ with deep gratitude, and laboring together with Him.
