3 John 1:10

Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church.

The verse concerns Diotrephes refusing to receive John and the brethren who were preaching the gospel to the Gentiles. He acted from love of having the preeminence and from a feeling of self-superiority, treating these strangers disrespectfully and discourteously because they were not influential men. He himself would not receive them and hindered their reception and entertainment by the church, speaking against them with spiteful, malicious words. Not content with that, he forbade those who wanted to receive them and persecuted and cast out of the church those who did receive them. John reproved this conduct, so it stands as an example not to be followed, teaching that God's missionaries should always be given a kind reception, hospitality, and help forward on their journey.
