Acts 1:25

That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.

The verse is the disciples' prayer to the Lord who knows the hearts of all men to show which of the two appointed men He had chosen, Joseph called Barsabas surnamed Justus or Matthias, to take part of the ministry and apostleship. It belongs to the account of Christ's commission to the disciples, the promise of the Holy Spirit, and the angels' message to the waiting disciples, a setting where faith in God's word is to be shown by works and practical godliness is called for.

Judas by transgression fell from the ministry and apostleship to go to his own place, leaving one place vacant in the ranks of the apostles that had to be filled by another man ordained to be a witness with the others of Christ's resurrection. After the believers prayed, the Spirit of God selected Matthias to fill the vacant office and position of trust left by Judas. The disciples entrusted the selection to the Lord because He alone knows every heart and can judge fitness, recognizing their own judgment was imperfect rather than relying on human judgment alone. He alone can read the hidden secrets of the heart.

The filling of the vacancy gives instruction regarding the choosing of men to bear responsibilities in the church, teaching that the Lord has certain men to fill certain positions and that choice must be guarded with careful consideration of fitness so as not to betray sacred trusts as Judas did. Nor are those to be urged forward or appointed who are not capable of the work. Choosing ministers shows the solemnity of appointment to apostolic ministry and requires believers to move carefully and with great discretion, presenting every case before God in earnest prayer and asking Him to choose, and God will teach His people to make a wise choice.
