Acts 13:27
For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him. For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him.
The setting is the missionary journey of Paul and Barnabas, with Paul speaking at Antioch in Pisidia on the Sabbath after the reading of the law and the prophets. In that sermon he traced how the Lord had dealt with the Jews from deliverance from Egyptian bondage and proclaimed Jesus as the promised Savior from David's line, the Messiah foretold in prophecy. Those dwelling at Jerusalem and their rulers did not know or recognize Jesus as the promised Messiah. Although the Law and the voices of the prophets were read every Sabbath in their synagogue gatherings, they did not know or understand those prophetic words. By condemning Jesus they fulfilled those very prophecies they had not understood.
The same blindness and hardness was repeated at Antioch, where Jews who at first listened with intense interest became envious at the multitude of Gentiles assembled to hear. They contradicted with blasphemy and raged with insulting language when told this Messiah is to be a light to the Gentiles as well as the glory of Israel. The message of salvation was sent to Jews and Gentiles alike, so the word turned to the Gentiles, who rejoiced that Christ receives them as children of God.
