Acts 13:33
God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.
Paul spoke these words at Antioch in Pisidia in the synagogue on the Sabbath after the reading of the law and the prophets. In that sermon he traced God's dealings with the Jews from deliverance from Egyptian bondage and set forth the promise of a Saviour from the seed of David. He preached Jesus as that Saviour of men, the Messiah of prophecy, the promised Messiah.
The verse declares that God fulfilled the promise made to the fathers for their children and descendants by raising up Jesus, raising Him from the dead. The words from the second psalm identify Jesus as God's Son and point to this raising of Jesus as the fulfillment of the declaration that on this day God has begotten His Son. The resurrection confirms Jesus as the promised Messiah, who was raised never to return to corruption.
That promised Messiah was to be a light to the Gentiles as well as the glory of Israel, showing that the Gentiles are recognized as children of God. Jews who listened with interest one Sabbath rejected the message the next Sabbath from envy, jealousy, bigotry and prejudice against Gentiles sharing religious privileges equally, contradicting with blasphemy and insult, while Gentiles rejoiced and gladly received the word. Paul and Barnabas therefore turned without hesitation to the Gentiles.
