Acts 15:34

Notwithstanding it pleased Silas to abide there still.

The setting is the history of Jewish and Gentile believers centered at Antioch in Syria. There Paul and Barnabas gathered the believers to report how God had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles. That church at Antioch was large and growing, a missionary church made up of both Jews and Gentiles.

This belongs to the account of the Jerusalem meeting called to settle the disagreement over whether Gentile believers had to be circumcised and keep the law of Moses in order to be saved. The law in question was the ceremonial law. In that meeting the apostles and elders acted as counselors, leaving room for the Holy Spirit to guide the decision. The settlement they reached brought consolation and rejoicing to the Gentile believers.
