Paul and Silas Comfort the Jailer in Prisonby KalebRosendahl

Acts 16:26

And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.

Suddenly a great earthquake shook the foundations of the Philippian prison, opened all the doors at once and loosed every prisoner's bands and chains. Paul and Silas were there after cruel beating, with feet fastened in stocks, yet at midnight they prayed and sang praises with rejoicing, while angels were present with them so that prison walls could not cut them off from Christ. By God's power none of the prisoners fled, and the awakened jailer recognized God's intervention, asked how to be saved, confessed his sins and with all his house welcomed God's Spirit and joined the way of salvation. Faithfulness to truth brings divine deliverance even when all looks like failure, for the imprisonment was God's providence to carry light inside the prison walls to one who would never have been reached otherwise. Where even two or three love and obey God, though enclosed in prison, Jesus presides there as His church, and that midnight deliverance stands as a token of His sudden deliverance of His people at midnight amid signs that overturn nature.

Mission Setting at Philippi

The shaking of the prison foundations took place at Philippi, the chief city of that part of Macedonia, a colony. It belonged to the first proclamation of the gospel by Paul and his fellow workers beyond the confines of Asia Minor into Europe. The way for that crossing was prepared and opened by the night vision at Troas on the borders of the Mediterranean Sea, in which a man of Macedonia pleaded for help.

That call allowed no delay. After the vision Paul and Silas and Timothy, accompanied by Luke, concluded with certainty that the Lord had called them to preach the gospel to the Macedonians. They sailed directly from Troas to Samothracia, then to Neapolis, then to Philippi.

Prayer Amid Suffering Imprisonment

Paul and Silas lay in the Philippian prison after cruel beating and torture, fastened in stocks and unlawfully confined for obeying God rather than human commands for the truth's sake. Heaven's approach to their suffering caused the earth to quake and the prison doors to open while they sang praises despite their pain. Their deliverance in that condition led to the jailer's response to God's power and to the telling of how God had acted.

With feet in the stocks when everything looked very discouraging, under suffering and disgrace, they prayed and sang praises to God at midnight, rejoicing and remaining fearless by divine power. Their words astonished the other prisoners, who were unused to hearing prayer and praise in the dungeon. While they were singing the earthquake suddenly shook the foundations of the prison and opened all the doors and freed every prisoner from his bands. What looked like failure in jail became the means for conversion.

Angels of God were present with them in prison when outward conditions looked very discouraging. Prison walls cannot sever faithful people's communion with Christ. God's presence and angels bring light and peace, so even a dungeon can be like a palace.

Among convicted sinners in the Macedonian dungeon Paul lifted up Christ as the One who hates sin, loves the sinner, bore our sins and imparts His righteousness. Opposition and persecution did not turn him from his purpose of serving Christ.

Angel Earthquake Opening Prison

God sent an angel to free Paul and Silas, and heavenly messengers came to them in the Philippian prison on a mission of mercy. That sending was angelic ministration to prisoners for Christ's sake, one example of how holy angels in all ages have ministered to God's people. Suddenly, as the messengers came, the earth shook in a great earthquake that shook the city and the foundations of the prison. It was a miraculous act of God, revealing His power and His care for His suffering servants.

Immediately all the prison doors were opened. Every prisoner's bands were loosed, and chains and fetters fell away from all who were bound. The loosening was done through God's angel, so that the bonds of every prisoner were released at once. By God's power the prisoners remained in the jail and did not escape. Paul kept the released prisoners from fleeing, calling out to restrain them and reassuring the jailer that no one had escaped. In this they avoided the appearance that they were criminals, preserved the witness of the gospel, and spared the jailer from death.

Jailer Conversion Wider Fruit

The shock that shook the prison foundations and threw open every door and loosed every chain also roused the sleeping jailer, who woke to suppose the prisoners had fled. In that moment Paul and Silas stood fearless while the earth reeled beneath them, rejoicing under suffering and disgrace and showing Christlike calmness and forgiveness toward their captor instead of panic or flight. That steadfast witness drove conviction of sin home to the jailer's heart, and trembling he humbled himself and confessed his guilt rather than turning away. Unlike Felix, who also trembled under conviction yet did not repent but sent God's messenger away, the jailer yielded and sought mercy.

He understood that God Himself had intervened to save the apostles, and the opened doors and fallen fetters led him to ask how he might be saved and to hear salvation through Jesus. With trembling he confessed his sins, received pardon, and joyfully welcomed God's Spirit into his own heart and into his home, choosing to become a child of God and an heir of heaven. What had looked like utter failure in stocks and dungeon thus became the means of conversion for the jailer and all his house. With his household and even the prison inmates he followed the way of salvation and joined Paul's disciples, their hearts opened to the gospel by what God had done.

The apostles did not use their freedom to escape, and Paul held back the released prisoners from fleeing, so their restraint kept them from appearing as criminals and spared the jailer from death under Roman law. That refusal to flee, joined to miraculous deliverance, preserved the witness of the gospel and brought the apostles and their ministry to wider notice. Their deliverance displayed God's grace after shameful and unlawful imprisonment, and they afterward rejoiced to tell the new believers at Philippi how God had acted and how the jailer and prisoners had been converted, and the believers were strengthened thereby.

The same manifestation of divine power in freeing Paul and Silas reached still farther, helping to lead officers in Caesar's household to conversion.

Encouragement Doctrine and Prophecy

Holding fast to living principles of truth brings divine deliverance even when outward conditions look utterly discouraging and like failure, for while feet were fastened in stocks after beating and confinement the singing of praises was met by a sudden shaking of the prison foundations that opened every door and loosed every band, and what looked like failure in jail became the means for the conversion of the jailer and all his house. The imprisonment was direct providence to carry the light of truth inside prison walls to convert the jailer who would never have been reached otherwise. Obeying God rather than men when human laws oppose God brings believers into strait places with reproach, persecution and prison, especially when the message goes with a loud cry, and wherever they are brought they must bear the message and let their light shine.

Where two or three love and obey the commandments of God, even enclosed in prison walls, Jesus presides there, and that presence alone constitutes His church. The glory of God penetrates prison walls, flooding the darkest dungeon with glorious beams of heavenly light, and the bitterest opposition to God's great moral standard of righteousness cannot shake the steadfast soul who trusts fully in God. Sufferings like those of the apostles of old spread faith, win souls to Christ, and glorify His holy name. God constantly works in behalf of His people through angels commissioned from heaven to guard and watch over men, coming right into the prison house for those suffering for the truth's sake to take their prey out of the enemy's hands and break the prison's hold.

As prison doors were opened and servants were freed at Philippi, so the words of life can be unchained and Scripture released from suppression so its truths reach people. The sudden physical liberation shows God's power to unchain the words of life and free people from error and superstition. The midnight prayer and praise and earthquake are linked with God's sudden deliverance of His people at midnight amid signs and wonders that overturn the natural order, which the saints receive as tokens of their deliverance with solemn joy.
