Paul Speaking on Mars Hill at SunsetBible World

Acts 17:25

Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

God needs nothing from human hands, for He is self-sufficient and independent, and no outward display, offering, service or possession can add to His power and glory. He is Maker of the world and all things in it and Lord of heaven and earth, distinct from nature and not confined to temples made with hands. He Himself continually gives to all life and breath and all things, keeping every heart beating and every breath drawn, so that no one can live a moment without His sustaining power. Graven images and works of art cannot represent the living God, for they have no life or breath and move only as human hands move them. Therefore all human ability, reason, breath and property are His gifts, leaving no ground for pride and calling for gratitude, faithful stewardship and accountability in using what He lends for good and for the salvation of souls.

Paul's Setting At Athens

Paul spoke these words on Mars Hill at the Areopagus in Athens, in the very heart of paganism, to Epicurean and Stoic philosophers and others who had brought him there to hear his new doctrine about Jesus and the resurrection. Pointing to their altar to the unknown God, with hand outstretched toward the idol-crowded temple and statuary and idols, he declared the true God unknown to them. He set before those Athenians, who in ignorance worshiped nature, the evidences of Christianity as a religion from God and of heavenly origin. He was no novice, but one able to meet every class with light from heaven that no earthly power can quench.

He drew the proud, self-sufficient hearers away from heathen deities by revealing the true God, with tact born of divine love carefully avoiding a direct attack on their gods and great men that would have irritated them and put him in danger of the fate of Socrates. He met reasoning with reasoning, false philosophy with true philosophy, eloquence with eloquence, logic with logic, science with science, and oratory with oratory. With knowledge, oratorical style, and intellectual learning fitted to speak before kings and the great and learned men of Athens, he presented the divine character of the faith. In this he rebuked idolatry and the sins of a proud people sunken in vice despite knowledge, refinement, and art.

His words, with the description of his attitude and surroundings, contain a treasure of knowledge for the church, to be handed down to all coming generations bearing witness of unshaken confidence and courage in loneliness and adversity and of victory gained for Christianity. His address before the Areopagus was delivered with the same faithfulness and steadiness he showed while awaiting sentence in a Roman dungeon. He remained true to God before the court just as when facing imprisonment and death, for circumstances did not change his trust because faith reaches beyond what is seen to eternal things.

Although his hearers were silenced and his arguments could not be refuted, few accepted the gospel. His intellectual acquirements were often of value in preparing the way for the gospel, yet he failed to meet with the success he had hoped for, proving that intellectual acquirements, elaborate arguments over theories, and human wisdom even of learned men are insufficient without power from a higher source, the Spirit coming into the work and sanctifying every intellectual development to convict and convert sinners. The message was not wholly in vain, for Dionysius, one of the most prominent citizens, and some others accepted it and united fully with believers. Afterward, because that manner of elaborate argument over theories and display of ability and smartness produced little fruit, he determined to know nothing but Jesus Christ and Him crucified as Saviour of sinners, avoiding discussions of theories at Corinth and urging salvation in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, since purity of heart and life and close connection with Heaven give teaching power to convict souls and convert them from ignorance and darkness to light.

God Needs No Human Service

God is not served by human hands as if He lacked anything, for He Himself supplies to all life and breath and everything, self-sufficient and independent of man, needing nothing from human hands, worship, offerings, service, or possessions to add to His power and glory. No magnificence of outward display can please Him while the heart is otherwise engaged. He is Maker of the world and all things in it and Lord of heaven and earth, distinct from nature, and He does not live in temples made with hands nor is confined to a shrine or temple. The heavens are not large enough to contain God, much less temples made by human hands, yet He remains near to people and present throughout creation so they can call on Him wherever they live.

This exposes the fallacy of idol religion, for works of art and graven images cannot in the faintest sense represent the glory of the infinite and living God. Images have no breath or life, are only works of human hands controlled by human power and move only as human hands move them, so that those who worship them are in every way superior to what they worship. By contrast the true Maker of heaven and earth gives life and breath and all things, a difference most effectively made clear to those who do not know God through His works in nature, whose lessons drawn directly have a simplicity and purity of highest value for the heathen, for children and youth, and for all students, leading the soul away from sin and worldly attraction toward purity, peace, and God. The verse was declared on Mars Hill in the midst of Athens to Epicurean and Stoic philosophers and others who brought Paul to the Areopagus to hear his new doctrine about Jesus and the resurrection, with hand outstretched toward the idol-crowded temple and statuary and pointing to the altar to the unknown God to draw idolatrous hearers beyond false religion to a true view of the Deity.

It was spoken to Athenians who in ignorance worshiped nature and had erected altars for the worship of nature inscribed to the unknown god. Sin has obscured human vision so that depending on human wisdom people are inefficient and surely fail to read nature correctly, placing nature above God and failing to discern in it God and Jesus Christ whom He sent. God also orders the nations' times and boundaries so that people may seek and find Him. While God may still meet His people by His Spirit when they gather to worship, outward words and gatherings are of no avail when the heart is far from Him and serving idols with hands polluted with iniquity. True worship must be sincere, in spirit and truth and in holiness, with contrition of heart walking humbly with Him, and to all who look to Him and walk in Christ's footsteps He gives through union with the Holy Spirit sanctification, comfort, and victory over the world.

Giver And Sustainer Of Life

God is the true Maker who gives to everyone life and breath and all things, the source of every blessing and of all temporal and spiritual blessings by generous care and mercy. In this giving He reveals creative power and overruling providence as Lord of heaven and earth. All nature is alive, and through its varied forms speaks of Him as the wonderful Master-Artist to those who have ears to hear and hearts to understand.

He works constantly to keep vitality in the body, keeping the human body in motion and the heart in motion and the pulse beating, ever giving the breath of life to every member of His great family here below. Every soul is dependent on Him for every breath drawn and for food and everything, and no one can be independent and live a moment without His preserving life. If He withdrew His sustaining power or decreed death, human life would stop, and He could take away breath with one word. Yet He continually keeps alive even those who do not serve Him, and thousands upon thousands remain alive only by His forbearance.

He is not confined but present throughout creation and near to everyone, so that people live and move and have their being in Him and can seek and find Him wherever they live. He made the world and remains ever-present in supreme authority over it, having not left it to the jurisdiction of men, retired from action, or left it to domination of human agencies, but able to take people and lead them aright. He orders the nations' times and boundaries so that people may seek and find Him. Strife and variance among those who profess to obey and serve Him intrudes apostasy, rebellion, and discord into His fair domain.

Unity in diversity pervades all creation because varied individual things receive beauty and usefulness from the same source, the one Creator as the great reservoir of everything essential for each separate life. The whole human family depends on God for existence, breathing, and food, designed like a web in which each person is an individual thread composing His pattern. He writes His name on every work from the loftiest cedar of Lebanon to the hyssop on the wall, from mountain and grand ocean to tiniest shell, and the firmament displays His handiwork. Lessons drawn directly from nature have a simplicity and purity of highest value for the heathen, children, youth, and all students, leading the soul away from sin and worldly attraction toward purity, peace, and God.

Because He gives life and breath and has given His Son as a propitiation for sin in order that sinners might stand on vantage-ground with God, He is the One to commune with as sustainer of life. For this He deserves sincere reverence, earnest devotion, and love.

Human Dependence And Stewardship

Every ability of mind, every power of reason, and every breath drawn is a gift from God, leaving no ground for pride or boasting. Every breath depends on the Creator, so to choose opposition to Christ is unreasonable. He could take away with one word the breath that keeps life in the body, and thousands upon thousands remain alive only by His forbearance, yet they use powers of mind and body against their Creator as if it were something to be proud of, joining the enemy's ranks to learn how to defeat His plans and carrying rebellion against Him to the highest point. Riches and property give no high standing before God and give no excuse for exalting self over the poor, for what heaven values and what gives standing before Him is forming character after the divine similitude, with a clear and free and washed and cleansed soul.

The Lord is not dependent upon human agencies, but human agencies must be dependent upon divine agencies, for people cannot do without God though He can carry on His work without them. This is reason for gladness, calling everyone to inquire what is the way of the Lord, to refuse every suggestion of Satan's framing, and to look to Jesus and trust in Him. Showing oneself approved unto Him is to be studied and sought above everything else instead of coveting the approval and praise of lovers of pleasure and enemies of God. Upon Him all are equally dependent for breath, for food, for every moment of grace, and for strength to preserve integrity, since it is He who gives physical and spiritual life, and from His abundant fullness He can supply all necessities, so that when in need His children come to Him He will not send them away empty, and because this dependence is equal no one has a greater claim than another upon His mercy.

Because all good gifts of His providence come from Him, human gratitude is due to Him, and tithes and offerings acknowledge that all things came from Him by returning a portion of His bounty to sustain His worship. He does not ask people to reserve part of their possessions because He needs anything, since all the good enjoyed comes from His mercy as the giver of all things, and His gifts include probationary time in which to form characters fit for heaven. He is the great bountiful Giver who owns all things, with every good enjoyed coming from His mercy and His love shown in abundant provision for all, giving probationary time for forming characters fit for the courts above, and His asking for part to be reserved for Him is not because of any need on His part. His request that people set aside part of what they possess is an acknowledgment of His ownership, not a way to supply a lack in Him, since all life and breath and good things come from His generous care.

He continually keeps every person alive, including those who do not serve Him, and people are accountable for how they use the resources and physical and mental powers He gives them, for if He withdrew His sustaining power or decreed death, human life would stop. He needs nothing from people but gives to all life and breath and all things, working constantly to keep vitality in the body and keep the heart in motion and take care of each person moment by moment so that no one could live a moment without His preserving life. Therefore breath and strength and property and money are all the Lord's and not a dollar belongs to the person holding it. The life He preserves is to be repaid by doing good and repenting and being converted, seeking His converting power every single moment, refusing to spend means only to make self comfortable, and using property and money to work for the salvation of souls, with an account to be given for every wasted dollar that robbed the churches of means for that work.

He does not depend on human worship or gifts, because He gives life and everything possessed, and therefore only the Creator is to be worshiped. He sees and knows His people, hears their prayers, and provides for their needs, so that as He feeds the ravens He will not abandon them.
