Acts 19:22

So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season.

Acts 19:22 belongs to the stir at Ephesus when the yearly rites in honor of Diana were bringing in crowds, and Paul's preaching was undermining trust in the city's idol worship. It comes after more than three years during which Ephesus had been the center of his labor. In it he sends Timothy and Erastus on ahead into Macedonia while he himself stays on in Asia at Ephesus, because the cause there still requires his presence.

That sending is the opening move of his fixed purpose to travel through Macedonia and Achaia on his way to Jerusalem and afterward to go to Rome. He intends to remain in Asia until after Pentecost. But a sudden development at Ephesus soon forces him to leave earlier than he had meant.
