Acts 20:15

And we sailed thence, and came the next day over against Chios; and the next day we arrived at Samos, and tarried at Trogyllium; and the next day we came to Miletus.

The verse traces the successive stages of the sea journey from Assos toward Miletus on the way to Jerusalem. Miletus lay about thirty miles from Ephesus, and stopping there allowed Paul to send for the elders from Ephesus and give them farewell counsel before continuing on.

This onward journey toward Jerusalem followed Paul's learning of a plot against his life, which led him to change his route to go by way of Macedonia. By then he had given up hope of reaching Jerusalem for Passover and hoped instead to arrive by Pentecost. He hoped this visit to Jerusalem would help unite Jewish and Gentile believers.
