Acts 23:15
Now therefore ye with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you to morrow, as though ye would enquire something more perfectly concerning him: and we, or ever he come near, are ready to kill him. Now therefore ye with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you to morrow, as though ye would enquire something more perfectly concerning him: and we, or ever he come near, are ready to kill him.
The conspirators cloaked their intent to murder Paul in a plea for the commander to bring him down for a more thorough inquiry, so that he would be brought within reach of an ambush before he arrived. More than forty men bound themselves by oath to eat and drink nothing until they had killed him. The priests and elders agreed to the murderous scheme instead of rebuking it. A fast kept in order to commit murder is the kind condemned in Isaiah as fasting joined with strife and violence.
The verse shows the difficulties met in Christian warfare when enemies lay in wait for Paul. The same trying places will be met again, with spies watching on the track and lying in wait, with ambushes, with appearances before councils, and with imprisonment. Meeting those coming trials requires rising to a higher and holier standard. That means taking an advanced position of faith that knows God and the power of His grace, lifting up holy hands without wrath and doubting and believing that God hears prayer.
