Acts 23:19

Then the chief captain took him by the hand, and went with him aside privately, and asked him, What is that thou hast to tell me?

The visitor was Paul's nephew, his young relative, and the chief captain received him with kindness. He grasped his hand and drew him aside for a private conversation. There alone he asked him what he had to report.

That privacy gave the young man the opportunity to give his warning concerning the plot against Paul. He then explained the plot against Paul. In connection with that warning he urged the captain not to send Paul before the council.
