Acts 28:25
And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers, And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers,
Paul's one final word was spoken as his Jewish hearers failed to agree among themselves and were leaving. It was given while he was in chains and outwardly helpless before the power of the Roman Empire. In that word he declared that the Holy Spirit had spoken truly through Isaiah the prophet to the fathers and ancestors. He applied Isaiah's description of a people who hear without understanding and see without perceiving to those before him who stubbornly rejected the truth.
The reason named was that their heart had grown gross, their ears had become dull of hearing, and they had closed their eyes, lest they see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with the heart and be converted and be healed. Their refusal to receive the truth fulfilled the prophetic warning. Because of that refusal the salvation of God was sent to the Gentiles, and they would hear it. The verse thus outlines the present situation of willful rejection, and it belongs to Paul's witness of trusting God's word and standing firm despite outward helplessness.
