Acts 3:23

And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.

The promised Prophet raised up from among the brethren like Moses is Christ, the Son of God come in humanity as the Messiah and Saviour foretold by Moses and all the prophets from Samuel onward. Every soul is required to hear Him in all things whatsoever He says, receiving His teaching and obeying His word as the great Teacher sent from heaven with divine authority. Whoever will not hear that Prophet shall be destroyed and cut off from among the people, separated from God's people. This warning comes with impelling force now in the closing days of earth's history, when Satan works with increasing power because his time is short and God guides His people by the gift of prophecy as a living voice. The threatened destruction stands joined to the call to repent and be converted that sins may be blotted out, to the times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord and the sending of Jesus, and to the covenant blessing to all kindreds of the earth in Abraham's seed.

Context and Promised Prophet

Acts 3 records the witness borne after Christ had been rejected and crucified, when those who had rejected and crucified Him expected His disciples to be discouraged and crestfallen and ready to disown Him. Instead they heard with amazement clear, bold testimony given under the power of the Holy Spirit. The words and works of the disciples represented the words and works of their Teacher, so that all who heard them said they had learned of Jesus and talked as He talked. With great power the apostles witnessed to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.

The Prophet whom God would raise up from among the brethren like Moses is Christ, the Son of God come in humanity. He is the promised Messiah and Saviour revealed in the Old Testament and identified through His life, death, and resurrection. That promised Prophet is the distinguished Teacher foretold by Moses and the prophets, whose words carry divine authority. In its quoted setting that Prophet like Moses is identified with Jesus, and the verse is invoked in a call to heed God's prophetic guidance.

Moses pointed Israel forward to Christ as that Prophet whom they were to hear, and Moses understood Christ's mission. All the prophets from Samuel onward foretold these days and testified of Christ. They confirmed His mission as God's great remedy for sin, the guiltless One who was to bear the sins of the guilty. Christ would bring the Jewish system of types and shadows to its complete fulfillment, for He is the antitype of the whole system. To maintain the ritual service with great exactness while rejecting Christ is therefore to reject Him.

Hearing Christ the Teacher

To hear that Prophet is to hear Him in all things whatsoever He says, receiving His teaching and obeying His word. Every soul is under this requirement, for His words carry divine authority as the Prophet raised up by God from among the brethren like Moses. Hearing Him therefore means receiving His teaching, and refusal is disobedience to one who must be obeyed.

He came clothed in humanity, sent forth from God to this world as teacher and instructor, the great Teacher sent from heaven and the Son of God come in human form as the appointed Teacher. His work was to reveal saving truth plainly in contrast with error and against moral darkness, bringing certain knowledge of God and instruction on every subject essential for man to know to find the pathway to heaven. His truth stands out plainly and clearly defined, fresh and powerful, ever present and self-evident, with no mere suggestions, notions, or opinions, but only solid, saving truth. To all who receive His word and obey, He gives power to become God's children and sons of God, revealing the way to heaven and presenting saving truth.

Refusing to heed His message is not a harmless choice but a matter of judgment, with destruction and cutting off from among God's people for whoever refuses. The warning belongs to the time when Christ's authority is supreme and His power invincible.

Warning and Final Days

Every soul who will not hear that Prophet shall be destroyed from among the people, cut off from the people and separated from God's people. Hearing Him means receiving His teaching and obeying His word in all things whatsoever He says, for His words carry divine authority, and refusing to heed His message is a matter of judgment and not a harmless choice. The promised Prophet like Moses whom God raised up from among the brethren is Christ, the great Teacher sent from heaven, the distinguished Teacher foretold by Moses and the prophets, and everyone is required to hear and obey Him. To all who receive and obey His word He gives power to become God's children and sons of God, revealing certain knowledge of God and the knowledge essential for finding the way to heaven and presenting saving truth.

To maintain the ritual service with great exactness while rejecting Christ is to reject Him who is the antitype of the whole system, for Moses pointed Israel forward to Christ as that Prophet whom they were to hear. All the prophets testified of Christ as God's great remedy for sin, the guiltless One who was to bear the sins of the guilty, and Christ as that promised Saviour was revealed in the Old Testament and identified through His life, death, and resurrection. Rejecting Him makes religious services and ceremonies valueless, and rejecting the prophet God sends brings destruction.

The warning comes with impelling force now in the closing days of earth's history, in the last days of the work of the third angel's message, when Satan works with increasing power because his time is short. In that time God guides His people by the gift of prophecy in their midst as a living voice to counsel, admonish, and instruct, and sends through the gifts of the Holy Spirit diversities of operations in the outpouring of the Spirit in the time of the latter rain. The verse is therefore invoked in a call to heed God's prophetic guidance, for anyone who refuses to heed the prophet God raises up will be cut off from the people.

The threatened destruction stands joined to the call to repent and be converted that sins may be blotted out, to the times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord and the sending of Jesus Christ. It stands joined also to the restitution of all things spoken by the mouth of all God's holy prophets since the world began, to all the prophets from Samuel onward who foretold these days, and to the covenant blessing to all kindreds of the earth in Abraham's seed, of which believers are the children of the prophets.
