The Nations Rage Against the Lord's Anointedby lylesouthwell

Acts 4:25

Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?

The question belongs to the disciples' prayer and witness after Jesus had been rejected and crucified, when they testified boldly through the power of the Holy Spirit. God spoke it through His servant David as His mouthpiece, asking why the heathen rage and the people imagine vain things against Him and His Anointed, Jesus. The plotting is thus vain opposition to God Himself as well as to Christ whom He anointed.

That prophecy was fulfilled in the united hostility gathered against Jesus, for Herod and Pontius Pilate joined with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in array against Him. Though they opposed Him, what they did fulfilled what God's hand and counsel had determined beforehand to be done, and took place within His purpose. In praying this prophecy the disciples also understood the opposition they themselves expected as a continuation of the same hostility Jesus had faced.
