Acts 4:27 belongs to the account of Jesus' rejection and crucifixion. He is God's holy child, His Son, whom God anointed. Against Him both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together united in opposition.
Their gathering fulfilled the opposition to the Lord and His Christ described in the disciples' prayer. What they did against Him took place within what God's hand and counsel had determined beforehand, as the following verse states. After the crucifixion His disciples gave clear and bold testimony through the Holy Spirit, and their witness to His resurrection showed that they had learned from Jesus and spoke and acted as He did. The disciples understood this opposition to Jesus as the pattern for the determined opposition they themselves would face in their ministry. The action of Herod and Pontius Pilate against Christ stands in contrast to heavenly beings who now work for Christ united in serving and upholding God's glory.
