Acts 7:14

Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls.

The statement belongs to Stephen's defense before the council, in which he traced Israel's history from Abraham through Solomon. It was spoken as part of his last testimony before his judges under the direction of the Holy Ghost. As part of the account of the patriarchs, it shows that the Old Testament history of Joseph and Jacob belongs to the scriptural testimony pointing to Christ. When Stephen reached this point in his address, uproar broke out among the people, and he saw his fate in the faces before him and recognized the resistance to his words. Few properly appreciate this address, whose full significance is seen only when its occasion, time, and place are kept in mind.
