Acts 7:47

But Solomon built him an house.

In Stephen's review of Israel's history the account reaches Solomon's time and recounts the building of a house for God. Solomon himself built that house for God, a physical temple. That building was the temple in Jerusalem.

The temple was not God's dwelling place in the fullest and truest sense. The Most High does not dwell in temples made with human hands, and no such house made by human hands can contain, confine, or limit Him. Heaven is His throne, and heaven is the place of His highest worship, as shown with the words of Solomon and Isaiah.

The building stands in the history of God's chosen people connecting Jesus Christ with all Jewish history. It shows loyalty to God and to the Jewish faith and the spiritual meaning of the Jewish economy now made manifest through Christ, while the law in which Israel trusted for salvation had not been able to preserve Israel from idolatry. Reverence for the temple therefore gave the Jews no reason to reject Christ.
