Amos 2:4

Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have despised the law of the LORD, and have not kept his commandments, and their lies caused them to err, after the which their fathers have walked:

Unavoidable punishment was pronounced on Judah for three transgressions and for four, and that punishment would not be turned away. The cause was that Judah despised the law of the Lord and failed to keep His commandments. Their lies caused them to err, following falsehoods handed down from their fathers after which their fathers had walked.

Despising the law is shown when God's law is called merely the old Jewish law or a curse. Neglect of the commandments follows from that rejection of the law. The command to remember the Sabbath day stands as an example of the commandments that must be kept rather than neglected.

Judah's inherited religious practice did not make it faithful to God, even though it was received from its fathers. The people went astray by following lies that their fathers had followed. Long-standing ancestral tradition is therefore no proof that a belief or practice is of divine origin.

Contempt for the Lord's law and commandments brings punishment, and being led astray by inherited falsehoods dishonors God's ordinances when His truth is abandoned. That dishonoring is seen specifically in the Roman Catholic tradition that diminishes the Sabbath's special honor. It is seen further in limiting Sabbath observance to only part of the day.
