Amos 2:8

And they lay themselves down upon clothes laid to pledge by every altar, and they drink the wine of the condemned in the house of their god.

Amos 2:8 belongs to Amos's denunciation of Israel's idolatry and depravity. It was spoken against a society in which the rich lived in luxury gained through violence and robbery while the poor were sold into slavery. The verse charges the powerful with oppressing, exploiting, and preying on the poor and needy. Specifically, the people kept the garments the poor had given as pledges and laid themselves down upon them by every altar instead of returning them as the law required. They spread those garments out for idol worship, feasting, sleeping, and immoral acts, showing disregard for God's law and for common decency, so that their elaborate worship insulted God while they refused to meet His requirements.
