Amos 4:2
The Lord GOD hath sworn by his holiness, that, lo, the days shall come upon you, that he will take you away with hooks, and your posterity with fishhooks. The Lord GOD hath sworn by his holiness, that, lo, the days shall come upon you, that he will take you away with hooks, and your posterity with fishhooks.
Amos 4:2 belongs to a warning that privilege and prosperity did not excuse idolatry, injustice, and oppression. It stands as part of God's recounting of His dealings with Israel and of their crooked ways before chastisement in its severest form, given to force home conviction of sin and of righteousness and of judgment. In that setting it threatens national punishment upon Israel for failure to live by the light given.
Even in the threat, justice is mingled with love and mercy, leaving opportunity as individuals to repent before the stroke falls upon the nation. That mingled warning reveals love and long-suffering. It shows that God's relation to His church and to the world and His manner of dealing with them have ever been the same in principle, because He does not change.
