Amos 4:5

And offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving with leaven, and proclaim and publish the free offerings: for this liketh you, O ye children of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.

The command to offer thanksgiving with leaven and to proclaim and publish free offerings is irony spoken by the Lord God, not approval but sharp rebuke for a wrong course. Those addressed are not heathen but the professed children of Israel, who have been granted every temporal and spiritual advantage yet have not responded to His mercy and love. The call to bring sacrifices every morning at Bethel and Gilgal describes multiplying transgression while keeping religious forms.

That wrong course blinds the understanding and hardens the heart against justice and mercy, especially through arbitrary exaction and domineering over God's heritage. Their worship is an affront to His name because they offer to Him and then to their idols, condemning idols of wood and stone while daily committing idolatry by following their own devices, walking in their own ways, exalting self and dishonoring God. The Lord is indignant and abhors their course and cannot manifest Himself to them, but must give them up to strong delusions as just punishment for abusing long-offered and rejected means of grace, bidding them follow their beloved idols and bear the consequence of their perversity.
