Amos 5:23

Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols.

The refusal to hear the noise of songs and the melody of viols belongs to the same warning as the woe upon those who desire the day of the Lord, for that day is darkness and not light. It is directed against those who selfishly desire that day as a time of mercy and salvation for all, even while they keep holy feast-days and solemn assemblies and make many offerings and sing many songs. Their worship is refused because they have set up their own standard instead of God's by following false prophets who preach peace and promise life instead of warning of coming wrath.

Songs, musical offerings, and elaborate worship, including the ritual offerings and observances around them, are not a means of acceptance with God. They do not please Him when His people are backslidden and refuse to live according to His requirements. Outward religious observance and ceremony cannot replace the obedience and righteousness He demands. Such worship offered in disobedience is an insult to Him.

God rejects worship songs and instrumental music when they are empty sounds rather than worship offered with the spirit and understanding. Such music is lifeless when the Spirit of God has left the worshipers. Instrumental music offered to God is distasteful when the heart and life are corrupt. To use instruments as David did is wrong without the true spirit, grace, and usefulness.

God rejects songs and musical performance when worship has lost reverence and lacks genuine spirituality. This holds for religious gatherings that emphasize music, eloquence, ritual, and impressive buildings while their worship is insincere. Such ungenuineness is lying to God. God rejects noisy religious music, and this warning connects with public religious displays involving marching, trumpets, and drums, such as the Salvation Army's street processions.
