Amos 5:26
But ye have borne the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which ye made to yourselves. But ye have borne the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which ye made to yourselves.
Amos 5:26 belongs to Amos's warning against Israel's idolatry, much of which concerns the northern kingdom and foretells the downfall of apostasy, while also pointing forward to the last days and a famine of the Word. The word rendered images denotes physical idols fashioned by human hands, not moral likenesses. The idol Chivun named in the verse is also called Remphan. Chiun are star-gods and Moloch is worshiped with five demons, belonging with Baal and Astarte worship, divinations and sorceries, and animal and material worship.
Israel made for themselves and carried in worship the tabernacle or shrine of Moloch and the images or figures of Chiun, the star of their god, as representations of the heavenly bodies to worship the host of heaven. This idolatry took place in the wilderness during the forty years, accompanying neglect of sacrifices and disobedience to God, when Israel abandoned the Levitical sacrifices from the very time of their institution and did not offer slain beasts and sacrifices to God but made a calf and rejoiced in the works of their own hands. They held the tabernacle of Moloch and the star of Remphan dearer than the tabernacle of Witness and the Shechinah of God, showing that their elaborate religious practices insulted God when their conduct rejected His requirements and that they had turned from the Lord.
This proves they were disloyal to Moses even while he was on Sinai, calling him this Moses who had gone they knew not where, and yet more false to God, and as quoted in Stephen's defense and account it proves the Hebrew race had at every stage been false alike to Moses and to God. Because they refused to worship God, God turned and gave them up to worship the host of heaven, leaving them to heathen statutes and rites instead of His good laws that give life. The idolatry is linked to being taken into captivity beyond Damascus. The prophecy declares that God would carry them away beyond Babylon. This idolatry dates from at least 1000 B.C. and continues among the wild tribes of Mashonaland, where it degenerates worship and degrades all national, social, and individual life by the triple tyranny of slavery, polygamy, and witchcraft.
