Amos 5:4

For thus saith the LORD unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live:

The word to the house of Israel promises life to those who seek the Lord. That seeking is to be directed to the Lord himself rather than to reliance on places of worship. It turns away from Bethel and Gilgal and Beersheba as objects of trust.

The Lord to be sought in this way is the Creator and ruler of nature. Those religious sites offered no lasting refuge, for they were destined for ruin and captivity.

Seeking the Lord means turning from evil toward good, seeking good rather than evil. It means loving good and hating evil and establishing justice. To those who seek good and establish justice in this way the Lord promises to be with them.
