Amos 5:6
Seek the LORD, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Beth-el. Seek the LORD, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Beth-el.
The appeal is addressed to Israel as an invitation to turn to the Lord so that life may be preserved rather than lost. That seeking of God is set over against resorting to the nation's idolatrous centers of worship, which cannot give life. Refusal to heed the invitation exposes the house of Joseph to a breaking out of divine judgment like fire. That fire devours at Bethel, and once kindled there is no one able to quench it.
