Amos 5:8
Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name:
The LORD named in the verse is the Creator and ruler of heaven and earth who made the seven stars, the Pleiades, and Orion. He governs the cycles of light and darkness, turning the shadow of death and darkness into morning and making day dark with night. He calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out upon the face of the earth and upon the land. He is distinct from nature and to be exalted above it, for the heavens, the changes of day and night, and the waters are His works under His power, not Himself. Yet nature expresses His thought and reveals His love, power and glory, and as work is distinct from workman, nature is not God but the God of nature is to be honored.
The verse calls people, and Israel in particular, to seek this sovereign Lord, and seeking Him brings life. Seeking Him means turning away from places of idolatrous worship instead of turning to them. In its setting the call to seek Him stands against corrupt rulers who turn justice aside and hate those who speak rightly, whose cruelty and injustice would have been restrained if God's law had been obeyed.
